Terms of Use
Legal Help BC is a free public legal information website operated by the Justice Education Society of B.C. (opens in a new tab) (JES), a non-profit organization. These Terms of Use explain the rules for using this website. By using Legal Help BC, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
Legal information, not legal advice
Legal Help BC gives general information about the law in British Columbia. It is not legal advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a lawyer about your own situation.
Using this website does not create a lawyer–client relationship between you and JES. If you need advice about a specific legal problem, please speak with a lawyer or another qualified legal professional.
Who we are
Legal Help BC is run by the Justice Education Society of B.C. (JES), a registered non-profit. Our goal is to help people in British Columbia understand the law and find the help they need. We are not a law firm, a government agency, or a court, and we do not represent you.
Using this website
You are welcome to use Legal Help BC to learn about the law in British Columbia for your own personal, non-commercial purposes. When you use this website, you agree not to:
- use the site for any unlawful purpose or in a way that breaks these terms;
- present the information here as legal advice, or as coming from a lawyer;
- copy, republish, sell, or commercially exploit our content, except as allowed in the “Copyright and use of our content” section below;
- try to interfere with, damage, or gain unauthorized access to the website, its servers, or any connected systems; or
- use automated tools to harvest or scrape content in a way that disrupts the site or other people’s use of it.
Accuracy and how current the information is
We work hard to keep the information on Legal Help BC accurate and up to date. Even so, the law changes often and every situation is different. We cannot guarantee that the information is complete, current, or that it applies to your circumstances.
Laws, court procedures, forms, and deadlines can change quickly. Many pages show a “Last reviewed” date so you can see when they were last checked. For anything important, confirm the details with an official source—such as a government website or court registry—or with a lawyer before you act.
Links to other websites
Legal Help BC links to other organizations, government pages, and resources to make them easier to find. We do not control those websites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, or privacy practices. A link from our site is not an endorsement, and you use other websites at your own risk.
Copyright and use of our content
Unless noted otherwise, the content on Legal Help BC is owned by or licensed to JES and is protected under the Copyright Act (Canada). You may view, download, and print pages for your own personal, non-commercial use, and you are welcome to share links to our pages.
You may not reproduce, republish, distribute, or use our content for commercial purposes without our written permission. No warranties
Legal Help BC and everything on it are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent allowed by law. We do not promise that the website will always be available, uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components.
Our liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, JES and its directors, employees, and volunteers are not responsible for any loss or damage that results from your use of (or inability to use) this website, or from relying on any information on it. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under the law of British Columbia.
Your privacy
How we collect and use personal information is explained in our Privacy Policy, which describes how we handle information in line with British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms of Use from time to time. Any changes take effect once we post them on this page, and the “Last reviewed” date shows when we last updated them. If you keep using Legal Help BC after we make changes, that means you accept the updated terms.
Which laws apply
These Terms of Use are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply in British Columbia. Any dispute about this website or these terms will be handled by the courts of British Columbia.
